MG MGA - where did they all go

Hi, just spent an idle hour looking through the archives back to 1995 and it just struck me that none of the names back then seem to be around now, did they all loose interest and sell the cars

I'm still here but don't post very much.

I help moderate a forum in our business unit. I have been told by experts into this sort of thing that of the people who access a site on a regular basis, only 10% make posts.

Most sites start off enthusiastically, with everyone having a go. Then they gradually tail off into the regular 10% saddos like you and me!

What is always encouraging is when a totally new name pops up and says thank you for a bit of advice that has been posted. This proves that there is almost certainly the other 90% still out there trawling the information.

So why don't we, the regular viewers, post to admit we access the site, and see how many of us there really are.

Ok. :)

I always read the valuable inputs, but only have posted a few times over the last 4-5 years.
Michael Moder

I check it a couple of times a day - start a thread when I have questions - and respond when I can offer assistance.

A thread similar to this surfaced a couple years ago. Wanted to know who regularly watched this BBS and how often. I suspect many check in, but only a few respond to questions. I check the BBS almost every day (sometimes more than once). Many questions are repeats of previous that are well documented in the archives. Others get answered by "regulars". A few are so inane that it just doesn't matter. I usually only respond (unlike now) if I think I have something to add that hasn't been discussed.
Cheers,

I check in regularly to pick up whatever tidbits of info that I can, submit a post every now and then, and occaisionally start a new thread.

I only look when I have problems, but on occasion, I leave it up for others to read. I get some pretty interesting comments from none MG enthusiasts when they read the forum. I leave it open on common computers at work and people seem to enjoy reading about the cars and their owners. My son-in-law likes to see what others like me are up to, so whenever he and my grandsons are bored, they click on the website when they are visiting my home.
I have been reading this forum since back in the late 90s.
Cleve

I check daily, but posting takes me a lot of time so I do it less and less as the years go by.

Yes same here read everyday put 2 cents in rarely
B WALKER

I look daily but post infrequently. In the mid 90's I was immature and owned an MGB so I was elsewhere. I have grown up now.
Bill Haglan

I look daily to learn more about MGA's and how to keep them running. Also, have interest in modifications to update safety and performance on my 58 MGA i.e. MGB front disc brakes, tires for minilite wheels, 1622 engine, etc.
Reed Hayes

Only once a day for me, unlike the retired guys Dave and Marv.

Check most days, can't type, so contribute rarely. Bob P.

check every day. became a member a long time ago when I had a 74 MGBGT. Started reading the MGA section about 18 months ago when I was shopping. Bought my 1600 last August and installed an 1800 head this winter w/ the assistance of the archives here.
B Phillips

I also check in on a regular basis even though I have moved on to an MGTD, mgtf and MGB GT. Just sold my Coupe project car as I really didn't see when I would get around to it. I have restored many MGA's through the years since approx 1968/69.

Hi everyone, lots of new names, to me anyway, seems like there could be a lot more photos for Serge's site

I only get a chance to read the list on weekends. I used to read it at lunch at work, but at my new job (where, interestingly, we have a network administrator of British extraction) most sites based in Britain come acress painfully slow. Recently The Register, the BBC and The Scottsman are doing better, but this site is still slow. No idea why.
David Breneman

I check it most days - brilliant source of good ideas and trouble shooting - thanks to everyone who contributes ( me too sometimes) cheers Cam

Open up site on a daily basis. Also MGB - general & Tech plus Magnette. Wealth of info shared around. Happy to say I have finally aquired an MGA 1600 to join the B and ZB. First A I've had since I sold my 1500 in southern Ontario back in 1959.It bugged me forever - getting rid of that car. Keep sharing Safety Fast! Brian

OK, I am an infrequent flyer. But man, do you have a wealth of valuable information to reach out to. It's great knowing there is a place to research and draw on your real experiences. PLEASE, keep it going.

Check the site with some regularity, however, seldomly post.
Own a '58 Coupe. Hope to be road ready later this summer. This site is an invaluable source for information, plus an occasional chuckle.

I log on 3-4 times a week, running a car repair garage, restoring my Twin Cam, building a Coupe to sprint/hillclimb, recently bought a 1600 deluxe to restore, wife, house, garden etc. where does the times go? I should be working on my twink now instead of typing this! There are a lot of people who read this but never contribute, also, a lot of 'A' owner who do not know that this site exists.

Terry

Still around and still love my MG's!!!

Don't post much here as there are so many more knowledgeable people than I that do.
Check the site regularly to absorb the knowledge.

Hi Terry reading your message quickly I though it said restore wife, house etc I thought she won't be pleased with that, if this is this case is this a service you can offer, I have a 1954 model, seems to heve quite a lot of filler in her, paint is quite poor having a few cracks and peeling in a few places, she appears to be structuraly sound although the suspension has given a bit a she now has quite a lean to starboard, oops her she comes must go

I have considered women/female restoration and suggested to some that I could do spray-on sun tanning, which seems to be quite popular. Haven't had any takers to date but you never know! I think they are being a little bit picky, after all, whats wrong with standing naked in my spray booth (we'll sweep up first) and having a few mechenics observing (purely for training purposes) maybe its the thought of gold 2 pack paint. I hope your wife doesn't read your message, you may end up in the classifieds or on ebay.

At least once a week for me, daily when I'm working on something. Site has been a lifesaver for me several times.

-Chuck Mosher

Hi Terry, I can't quite decide on a full restoration, or just a sympathetic one to preserve all the original features, or whether to just break her up for spares, lol

I check at least weekly...mostly the MGB, MGA, and sometimes TR3 postings. I start a new thread when I can't find info in the archives.

I'm in the middle of a TR3 restoration, so I occasionally check the Rust and Restoration area for new postings as well.

My knowledge pales when compared to the regulars who post here. I can hardly imagine contributing something that hasn't already been covered far beyond my 2 cents.

I'm one of those who disappeared. I used to be very active on the boards. (MGA and MGC, since I was doing a B conversion.) Had two serious heart attacks in 98 and 99, so couldn't do much work in the shop for years. My daughters also went through their teen years during that period, which consumed most of my spare time. I sold the B-GT conversion project last year, still have the A but actually haven't had it on the road in a couple of years. I have it stored carefully inside. I am getting ready to retire and move to Lexington KY, where there are several active British clubs in the area. I am trying to decide whether to keep the A or sell it and buy a "softer" convertible for local use around the Bluegrass now that I will have time to get out and poke around. My mind says do the latter (kids have no long term interest in the car) but I have owned it since 1979, and it will be hard to pass on.
Arthur Shaffer

Hi Arthur sorry to hear your health has not been too good, hope you keep the A and get some enjoyment from her

Read daily, contribute occasionally. What interests me is that some questions get a thin response but others get an enormous response. hav'nt yet managed to work out quite why. An MGA on ebay especially if its description is a bit suspect gets everyone going.
J H Cole

Check in a few times a month but must now split my time with an E-Type BBS as it is under restoration!!
This one is much more comprehensive and so many quetions are found in the archives.

Neil

Hi, I read this about weekly, but it used to be daily, for about 10 years. I will me moving my MGA project (yet unfinished) to another town here this year, so I am open to advice on what to watch out for. I plan to haul the chassis (body is painted and fenders are on) and put the rest in boxes and wraps for the move. The biggest problem will be to find everything when I get there and to organize a new workspace.
Harley

Hi all,
I read the bbs about once a week but very rarely post. It seems everyone else knows more about the cars than I do so I just read and learn. I use my motor at least once a week but here in sunny Birmingham (England), it's mainly in dull weather but I NEVER drive with the hood up. (wife thinks I'm an idiot), probably am. I've just seen the post to put a picture up so as the sun's shining, I'll take a pic' and upload tomorrow.
