MG MGA - Where does it go? Carb bracket

58 MGA
I just had the carbs rebuilt, and have reinstalled them....BUT...I have a left-over part...with my luck it goes under that bottom rear carb nut(I had to cut a 9/16 wrench down to tighten it)...ok, tell me. (I assume the spring I also have left over uses it).

You can see it in place here: (picture attached). Viewed from underneath the rear carb.

Joe, It's the anchor for the lower end of the throttle return spring. It is mounted on the bottom stud of the rear carb. with the bend pointed away from the engine. Not a fun place to work, but if you did it once you can do it again.

It has to be fitted with feel, rather than by sight. The hardest bit is keeping the spring in place while you get the nut maneovered into place and started.

I found that with large hands the best way to install the carbs is to separate them and install the rear carb first, then the front. Otherwise, it's a real bear to put that bottom rear nut on, or to get the vac pipe threaded into its little hole.

I have also in the past resorted to making my daughter help me - she has little hands and wrists and arms and fingers, and is much more agile than I.

The factory in Abingdon must have purposely employed people with small hands, I think.

Thanks all. You were right, practice makes perfect!

This part was installed at the factory without the body on the frame.
Here is my white car before the body was installed.

Dominic,
I have always installed the bracket first, and then clipped the spring on to it.

The easy way to fit this bracket and spring is to do it on the bench! Remove and refit carbies attached to the inlet manifold as a unit. You will need an old style offset ring spanner to undo the manifold nuts.
