MG MGA - Which Celica 5 Speed for an AUS DELLOW conversion?
Am investigating a Dellow 5 speed conversion that uses a Toyota Celica gearbox . Am interested in any comments on the efficacy and overall benefits as well as any pitfalls. Also info on suitable gearboxes for adaptation , costs, sources and contacts etc (This is probably mainly for Australian owners as "Dellow" are an Aussie company) |

I've found answer on this web site http://www.dellowauto.com.au/main.html "APPLICATIONS FOR TYPE 1: 2T/3T 7 Bolt Split Alloy Case" For early MGB & MGA. Not that expensive as a Hi Gear T9 based conversion, can't tell more. Still exists Datsun 5 ratios gear boxes but in australia? |

I have inquired previously about this conversion, I have never been able to find out if it can be used without frame or tunnel modifications. The lever will be forward of the stock position. I have one of their Supra conversions that I am going to use in my MGB V8 conversion. |

Hi First of all You will need to find out which Toyota box your bellhousing suits.(split--steel--or supra) If it is for the early split box , they are fairly skinny and should fit the tunnel ok If it is for the later steel box it will probably still fit- Have used one on a v8 conversion on a B and it fitted without a problem at all.--- The best thing about the steel box is that the gearlever housing can be bolted on back to front to move the gearlever position. There are also a few different length gearlever housings (celica-corona)so you can get the lever exactly where you need it. -- Also be aware that there are a few different ratios available in the steel box. - The only disadvantage (minor) here is that if you get the close ratio box, 5th gear is also closer to 4th so you don't get quite as big an overdrive in 5th- but it is a nice box to drive with. Another trap is make sure you get a tailshaft with your box as they are starting to get a tiddle hard to find and if you get the choice get a shaft with u/joints that are replaceable (with circlips) as I believe the crimped in Japanese ones are very expensive to replace. A mate has a Supra box in his 4cyl B but he had a bit of trouble fitting it in the tunnel but it's in there and very nice conversion-- Same thing as steel box as far as different ratios and lever housings--- Bulletproof box Hope this helps Willy There's also Hadfield bellhousing from Castlemaine Rod shop |
