MG MGA - Which Exhaust Manifold?

When doing an 1800 MGB engine transplant,..which exhaust manufold do you use? The original MGA exhaust or the MGB exhaust?

Thanks,
Danny

Danny,
Most LHD owners use the mga stock manifold. To use the MGB, one must either shim the motor mount or machine an angle onto the gasket face of the 'B manifold to clear the steering column. A third option would be a performance header. I've chosen the original 'A header for my 18GB conversion. Downstream I might try to modify the MGB manifold. If you post an E-mail address, I'll forward the article on reworking the 'B manifold to fit an LHD 'A

Doug - What about a right hand drive car - Any issues?

Yes indeed. For a RHD MGA you can use the MGB exhaust manifold with the long center runner, which is a nice improvement. It doesn't fit a LHD MGA because the steering shaft is in the way.

Hi Barney, yep got one of those, with twin flange outlet end.

Danny did not specifically say LHD or RHD, and I wanted to know anyway for my up and coming conversion.

Hi Guys,

Sorry about that,...my car is a US spec Left Hand Drive.

Danny,
Presumably you transplanted an MGB engine for the extra power. Since it's now not going to win concourse, you might want to consider extractors, which are much lighter and give about 5 BHP more.
All the major MG places do them, including Stainless and big bore.
You can also cover them in the heat insulating tape, which makes driving your car much more pleasurable as it reduces the build-up of heat in the engine bay.

If I'm going with an aftermarket set of headers / extractors,...do I buy a set for the MGA or the MGB (OR are they the same for both cars)???

Danny, you'll want to use a set for the MGA.

If you're interested I have a comprehensive outline of the 5-main conversion that I put together after doing mine. It has all the info you should need.

Mark ,if it's not too much trouble, I would also like a copy of your outline. I am redoing a '60 and am looking for any info I can get for the 1800 conversion.
Thanks, Dan H.
