MG MGA - Which spacer

When making the conversion from drum to disc brakes, and changing the hubs from wire wheel hubs to steel disc .....Which spacer is used in the front disc hub. The long one or the short one. Thank you
Gordon Harrison

Aren't all MGA's the same--2"-------??
MGB's have a shorter one
William Revit

Gord, are you changing the rear axles back to disc type?
If you need the correct axle case, I have one I want to get rid of.

I have only ever done the conversion the other way but like Willy I think there's only one part number for all MGA except the Dunlop hub models: ACF4003

William.
I have two spacers . One is an 1 1/2 and the other is about 2 1/2 inches. Which one goes in the hub for disc wheels.

Art,

I am just taking off my front WW hubs and putting disc brakes and disc wheels. And I will change out the rear hubs , so they have longer lug nuts and put on the disc wheels.
Gordon Harrison

Sorry Gordon I don't know
I thought all MGA's had a spacer just under 2" long + shims,-maybe fit your bearings into the hub and measure the gap between the bearings
Are you sure they're MGA hubs, MGB have shorter spacers
Did they come as e set with the bolt on disc caliper brackets etc all off one car-
On the rear you have an issue as well, as well as longer studs you will need spacers to get the track right, wire wheel axle housings and drive shafts are shorter than steel wheel axles,--you will need a 7/8" wheel spacer on each side and longer studs to suit

MGB spacer is--1.5675" & 1.5695"

Starting to think I have a set of MGB rather than MGA front disc brakes. The came complete with everything. Spindles , reunions , disc , calipers etc so it is not a big loss. I can just replace the whole unit completely by re-assembling them and remove my MGA units completely. A few adjustments and I am OK. I am not looking to add disc to the rear but only want to upgrade the brakes and get rid of the wire wheels.

Gordon
If they are MGB you will have to make up some spacers for the top bolt through the shocky ,the mgb setup is narrower up there by about 3/4" so a 3/8" spacer each side of the top trunion will be needed

On the rear you will need the longer studs and 7/8" spacers to get the wheel track correct as your wire wheel axle assy. is narrower than a steel wheel axle assy.

I have just recently fitted complete MGB front spindle/ brake assemblies to a friends MGA and the spacers up top is the only thing you need to do to get that fitted up

To help you identify what you have---------
MGA rotors are-11"
MGB rotors were reduced to 10 3/4" to fit in 14" wheels but are quite ok on an A if using the whole MGB setup

Maybe this measurement and the top trunion width will identify what you have
Also MGB calipers bolt direct to the spindle whereas the MGA had an adapter bracket bolted to the drum brake spindle to take the caliper

Hope this helps

Here is a picture of the two different spacers. Notice the different size.

Now that you are into pics--
a pic of your 'new' spindle and of the 'new' top trunion with a measuring tape accross it will tell us what you have
If it ends up as MGB ,I'd go with them as the spindles are stronger/ newer than the others

I have used the spacers from an MG/TD front bumper mounts to fill in the gaps on the top mount.. MOSS # 400-100. They did not use any filing or grinding to fit. Some of them are steel but all the new ones are aluminum.

I have it all sorted out now. My parts are MGA and the spacer required is the long one. My local parts guy had a complete disc brake set off an Mga and I was able to get all the pics I need to complete the build. Thank you everyone for your help.

Very good--full steam ahead young man
Thanks for reporting back
