MG MGA - Who sells the best bumpers?
I’m to the point of having to purchase new bumpers, rather than having my old ones re-chromed. Does anyone know who sells the best reproductions? The Moss website says theirs has a few ripples and only looks good from 3 meters, or so. I don’t care where I order them from, or how long it takes to get them, but I don’t want something that is going to look bad from the start. |

Cleve: I've decided to go the rechroming route. However, I have not been able to find a decent front bumper to start with. If you have an original front bumper and over riders in good shape and wish to sell them to help defray the cost of new bumpers, please send me an email off BBS. sbrandt "at" rochester.rr.com Thanks, Steve |

Steve, I don't think my bumpers are prospects for re-chroming. Over the years, too many people bumped into them parking the car on the streets, and they are out of shape. |

Try Sports and Classics in Conn. USA. Not as good as original but better than some I have seen. |

Hi this might help on UK Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MG-MGA-FRONT-BUMPER-AND-OVER-RIDERS_W0QQitemZ200119631800QQihZ010QQcategoryZ27380QQtcZphotoQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem gordon |

Thanks Gordon...It looks like exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, it ends today and with the time difference, it is not likely that I will receive a response to a query about selling/shipping to the US. Any help from the nightowls in England would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve |

Sort of an educated guess, but from my impression of the bumper end in the larger picture it looks like one of the 1980's vintage repro bumpers with flat face and sharp corners where the overriders would only fit with some grinding on the inside corners (after which they go rusty around the edges). Rust on the inside surface is also a hallmark of that issue. That style is easy to spot on a car from 15 feet away, obviously not original shape. |

Hi here's another one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MGA-rear-bumper_W0QQitemZ120133682151QQihZ002QQcategoryZ27380QQtcZphotoQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem gordon |

Gordon: Thanks...I have an almost perfect original BMC rear bumper that I bought new decades ago. The one listed looks to be a repo. I'm not as sharp eyed as Barney when it comes to spotting a repo from a picture, but the contour doesn't look quite right. Finding an authentic front bumper is proving to be difficult because of the inevitable parking damage and replacement with cheaper and more plentiful repo's over the 50 years of the model's life. When I think of the ones that I have passed by or discarded over the years... In any event, any help is greatly appreciated... And Cleve, sorry, I didn't mean to highjack the thread. Thanks again, Steve |

Hi Cleve, following these discussions and taking a good look at my front bumper it is obviously am early replacement giving a flat appearance, I have ordered a 3 piece replacement from Anglo Parts in the Netherlands which by all accounts has an almost original profile and the chrome is supposed to be much better than some of the others on offer because it is done in europe rather than the far east and will last much better, I wait it's arrival with baited breath and will let you know gordon |

Scarborough Faire used to advertise that they had their own bumpers made to the origional contours and were triple plated. I have never purchased one but it might be worth a call. Have a good day! John |

John, I contacted them and requested a catalogue. |

Cleve, I have Scarborough Faire bumpers on my car and they're pretty nice. The material is lighter weight than original and the chrome, while nice, is no-where near what you get from a good plating house. There is some visible waviness, but not bad. The contours are very close to original. As long a you're not looking for a 100 point car they should be satisfactory. Cheers, GTF |

Hi all isn't funny how things come about, this afternoon I took a fake nose piece from a grill to be rechromed, the chap running the place recognised it and said I think I have some mg bits in the store, we found an original back bumber in good nic front bumpers not quite so good plus all the overiders plus some more to come, then he opened a cupboard which seemed to contain most of the mortal remains of a TC he owned, steering wheel etc, hopefully I can get him to rechrome bumpers . gordon |

GC, In addition to collecting old cars, I also collect old car literature, especially parts books and catalogues. I was going over a 1970’s JC Whitney catalogue from the U.S. that had a listing for MG parts, when I came to an interesting ad. It was for a “cast aluminium bumper set” for the MGA. It mentioned that it was thicker, but lighter than the original. Somehow I think I have seen one of these in the past, and it was not pretty! Too dull. Looked like it came from an Airfix kit. |

Hi Cleve all fitted no problems looks much better, that may be just in my imagination lol, gordon |
