MG MGA - Why don't they tell you everything
My starter motor doesn't always engage, so I decided to get it off and clean it. I looked quickly at my Haynes manual, and after much knuckle stripping got the bolts out. Haynes says 'now lift it forward towards the radiator, and out' What they didn't say was that the oil filter would be in the way. So its back on until the next oil change. |

Nigel I ended up with the same problem. I first found the problem when I fitted the high starter position back plate with my 1800 conversion, combined with the spin on oil filter conversion. The steering shaft does not help either on the RHD car. Steve |

Nigel, welcome to the club! Last year I had a charging problem and decided my batteries were probably shot. Also found that the starter was turning intermittently so I decided to change it and then of course to change the oil and filter anyway. Put on a spare starter I had on the shelf that worked fine off the car and had the same problem, tried another for good measure to confirm that the original starter was in fact in perfect working order! At the end of the day dynamo, batteries and starter were absolutely fine and the problem was somewhere in all the battery lead/terminal/post connections. After a thorough cleaning and retightening the car performed flawlessly. |

Nigel, You don't have to pull your oil filter canister to remove the starter, but you do have to remove the distributor. Don |

Don Sorry, you are wrong. With our RHD cars you do have to remove the oil filter. The steering column prevents pulling the starter motor upwards. Steve |
