MG MGA - Windbreaker Rear Screen

I use my 1600 on long drives and I notice Moss have a windbreaker advertised which appears to bracket onto the hood body attachments rear of the doors. I am tall and have my back almost up against the tonneau body edge and it looks like the windbreaker would be up against my head or worse. Has anyone tried this unit..and can it be fitted without any body mods or holes etc. ?
n ferguson

It just mounts to the screws that hold the hood on. No drilling, no mods needed. The first units had brackets that were too close to the driver and I had new ones sent to me last year that moved it back so it does not hit the driver.
JEFF BECKER

Jeff, how effective is it at reducing wind noise / buffeting behind the occupants?
Andy Bounsall

Hi guys,

do any of you know the part number? Sounds like a great idea, but I'm not sure if Moss in the UK sell them.

Cheers,

Grant :-)

Grant, try 458-294.
Andy Bounsall

Jeff..How did you specify the longer bracket? I don't see any options for this in the Moss catalogue ?
..and can you advise the material of the windbreaker ?
n ferguson

The material is plexiglass. The person who builds them is on the east coast of the US. Little British Car Co who is one of the sponsers of this site I believe was one of the first to sell them. The longer brackets are now used on all new units. Trial and error has led them to make the brackets longer as they had too many complaints. The wind noise is reduced but not to the point as a hardtop on the car but still an inprovement. Due to shipping cost it might be cheaper to get it from Moss or check with LBC to see if they ship where you live.
JEFF BECKER

Just checked, and the LBC one is $50 cheaper than Moss (what a surprise). I'm just about to send them an email to see how much shipping back to Blighty will be, as the £/$ rate is so good at the moment.

Cheers to Andy et. al

I hate the British pound!!!! Bring back the good old days when we could do a little better at $1.60 to the pound. all I could eat and afford was appitisers instead of a regular meal.
JEFF BECKER

Jeff....Thanks for all the advice. You have re-assured me about the unit. I could not get much from Moss.
n ferguson

Jeff - the good old days? Surely that was before some bloke dumped a load of tea in Boston Harbour and you guys were still using Sterling ;-)

/$ rates are alway good fun, give it a while and it will reverse.

I've spoken to LBC, affordable shipping and all I need to do now is fit the body to the chassis, fit the interior, run the engine for the first time, etc, etc,

Grant :-)
G Hudson

Grant, What is taking you so long to get it together? are you waiting for the car to go up another 5000 pounds in value before you get it going.
JEFF BECKER

Just ordered the Windblocker from Little British Car co over net and very good value (compared to Moss ).....

LBC.....price US$165 plus $69.75 airfreight ie $234.75
Moss....price $219.95plus$169.75 airfreight ie $389.70

A clear 66% cheaper..Yaroooo!!!
Thanks for the leads.
n ferguson

N Ferguson, you can send me my gift certficate to LBC for all the money you saved!!!!! Glad the information helped

I'm not saying I put the roof up very often... But when I do its usually in a hurry. Do you have to remove this windstop before you can put the roof up? Surely the brackets get in the way. How easy is it to remove and is it small enough to stow easily in the car?

I have not tried to put up the top with it on. I also bought from LBC a vynal storage bag which I use to keep it stored in the garage or in the trunk so it does not get scratched. I don't think Moss sells those and are great to keep it new looking. The only problem would be the top frame clearing it. it should be ok with the top up and then put on.
JEFF BECKER

David,

I've had the Windblocker installed on my '56 for about two years. I do like it. It does seem to cut down the wind in the cockpit somewhat at highway speeds, but not completely. More importantly it reduces the cockpit noise and makes it easier to talk to the passenger and listen to the CD player. (I have the louder Moss "Performance Sport Muffler" on my car.)

It is easy to take on and off. It must be removed before raising the hood (top). Installation of the mounting brackets is simple and straightforward and takes less than a half hour, as I remember. There are no holes to drill: it secures to the body beneath the convertible top (hood) frame attachment plates, using slightly longer bolts, if I remember correctly.

The actual Windblocker is a piece of plexiglass that is well bolted to a sturdy frame which has detachable ends (therefore adjustable to fit the cockpit measurements of each A. These moveable ends have a short rod that fits into the female receiver bracket permanently attached to the cockpit as mentioned. Installing and removing is simple takes seconds to do.

The only downside I have found is that it can, after a while on a long trip, vibrate the attachment bolts loose and set up a noise. Simple to fix. I probably need to add lockwashers.

All in all, I like the unit and I'm glad I got it. The big plus: you can actually wear a baseball cap at 75 MPH and not have to be constantly resecuring it!

N.Ferguson. Hi. Thought you might like to know in advance of getting your windblocker from LBC that when mine arrived there was no way it would fit. The mounting brackets were badly/wrongly bent and not even the same (they should be identical but opposite hand if you understand me).
It took lots trial fittings and repeated belting with a large hammer and twisting with a podger pushed into the tubes to get the unit to sit properly(it started off sitting on top of the tonneau). Eventually ok and always use it now. It does tend to rattle and the mounting screws need tightening up occasionally- and there is quite a lot of adjustment of the brackets can be got from them as well.Very easy to put on and take off.
