MG MGA - Windsheild Washer Bottle

I notice that in most MGA's ,the location of the WSWB is on the bulkhead and screws thru the bottom of the washer bottle holder. My WB (which is origional to the car/2 owners) has no holes in the bottom of the rack but does have the holes on one of the rack sides. Mine is mounted on the vertical bulkhead right next to the place where the excelorator cable comes thru the bulkhead. I am confused as to which is the right mounting.....and why my rack has holes in the sides and not the bottom.

Hi Gordon - mine is mounted on the bulkhead next to the heater box on the LHS (RHD car)- but this was an optional extra and may have been fitted by the supplying garage - so could have been fitted wherever the mechanic thought best - cheers Cam

Cam,
Any thoughts on why the holes are only drilled in the side bar of the rack and not the bottom. To mount yours did you have to re-drill the rack? Is it possible that my coupe, being an early model had the WB mounted this way as origional and it was changed later? And what would have been the purpose of the "bend"in the rack side bar/ Allmost like it was meant to be mounted on the vertical bulkhead wall.

Gordon,
Your bottle appears to be an early one, and might be original. (small filler cap). I was given one a few years back, and this bracket has holes in the botttom and on the side, but I believe this came from an early MGB. (Later MGB's had a soft bag that hung on two pegs)
The mounting position was perhaps changed later, and the bracket drilled at the bottom, to make it easier to fill, as I imagine one against the firewall/bulkhead would be under the bonnet panel and difficult to get at the top. Peter.

On page 97 of Clausager's book it show an example of a "early" mounting position for the washer bottle. It is next to the ID plate. The bracket has a "bend " in it and looks to be holes in the bend, which aren't being used for mounting. The bottle has the small neck.

My car was never fitted with a washer. During the restore, I chose to mount it on a plate that was made to fit in the area that was for the RHD brake clutch pedals. Screws though the bottom of the bracket hold it down. The location makes it easy to fill and out of the way for most all servicing. I've never heard anybody say "The washer bottle is in the wrong location".

YMMV

The washer bottle can be mounted where the installer decided to put it, as most washers were after market/dealer installed options.
If the factory mounted the bottle, it was mounted in front of the heater on very early 1500 models and on subsequent models off to the right or left of the heater depending on the driver location.
Clausage has pictures of both locations.

So if the WB were after market items....and I am almost certain mine is origionally mounted vertically on the bulkhaed wall....then if I remount it there, I am not making a mistake. Thanks everyone.
