MG MGA - Windshield washer

Does anyone know if the windshield washer dash assembly will fit in the lighter hole instead? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

The washer is a very similar size to the lighter as far as I can see Thomas.

What lighter hole?

The cigar lighter that is purchased from aftermarket motor shops is far bigger in diameter that the manual washer pump fitted to an MGA. If my memory is any good :)

I fitted an original period washer pump to my dashboard ( the tudor design ) using a spare standard size switch hole.
It doesnt feature the larger recessed pump mounting but it looks fine there on the dash. It works just fine and although it does protrude more, it still looks right and no one has noticed it so far.

When I got the car it was fitted with an electric washer pump that although it made the right noises, it just wouldnt pump the washer fluid.
I replaced it with a new electric pump but found that this also had the same fault.
So I bought an old midget manual washer pump on ebay for £2.50, fitted it and found that it also wouldnt pump.
After checking the tubes and the reservoir I was suprised to find that the washer fluid had condensed down to a thick gel after a couple of years and just blocked the tubes.
I did try the electric pump again later and it worked fine but used far too much water when compared with the manual pump.

I fitted an "original" type windscreen washer pump from Moss. After a couple of weeks the internals fell to pieces so they replaced it. Within a month or two the valves inside the second pump packed up, so the pump would only shunt the washer fluid back and forth up the pipes and not out onto the screen. The third pump they sent me, failed in the same way as the second, so rather than go through the rigmarole of sending it back to them again, I fitted external valves; the sort used on aquarium airlines as anti-syphon valves, in the inlet and outlet pipes. It has worked perfectly ever since!
