MG MGA - Wiper arms
The wiper shafts have quite fine serrations, but the sockets seem to be much coarser. Is this normal? |

Art, I’m not sure if this is normal but mine are the same. My wiper blades are the original Rainbow type. Richard |

My modern replacement wiper arms just kept on falling off and so I switched them for the midget type. These have a screw which when tightened, clamps the arm much tighter onto the splines. I had to adjust the angle of the blades slightly to get them to park neatly but it was just a simple tweak in the vise to do it. I have just recently converted the wipers to two speed which works great except that the first time I really needed them (on last summers torrential MGA Day!)the left hand side arm fell off, again! The problem is that the splined spindles on the modern replacement wheelboxes are made of fairly soft metal compared with the original ones. Probably my using grips on the splines to help the flexy drive to go past each wheelbox hasn't helped too much. I have most likely rounded off the splines. I did have to remove the flexy drive about 4 times in the process. So I am going to look in my parts box to see if I still have a pair of OE wheelboxes. They look a bit tatty but I would bet they are better built than the new ones. Hopefully this will be the last time the wiper motor has to come off for a few years. Colyn |

Colyn, You RHD guys are so lucky. We in North America have to remove the brake master cylinder etc to get the wiper motor in and out! Peter. |

I had exactly the same experience as Colyn with repro wiper boxes, the arms kept falling off, even the type with screw clamps. Once substituted with a second hand set they were fine. The repros are rubbish. |
