MG MGA - Wiper Motor Alternatives

I've rebuilt the wiper motor and am now facing the difficult task or reinstalling it. Having travelled home from Gatlinburg in heavy rain without it last week, using only Rain-X, I'm fairly convinced I don't need the wipers to work while on the road, but I do need them to pass the state safety inspection.

Question - anyone out there with an alternative way to drive the wiper blades?

Ken, my old Model A Ford had a manual wiper arm on the passenger side and a vacuum motor on the driver's side. I don't recommend either. Even the single speed MGA motor is much easier to use even if it is a pain to install. ;-)

You could mount it on the RH side on the firewall under the dash, that's how it's done on an MGB.

Otherwise you may have to remove the MC to have any chance of getting it in.

I had my wiper motor out last winter for some repairs. I took advise that I think came from Barney Gaylords site and removed the brake & clutch pedals & pushrods, leaving the MC in place. It took perhaps 1/2 hour. With the pedals removed, there was sufficient room to manouver the wiper motor out & back in without too much trouble.

I pulled mine out last year for it's scheduled 200,000 mile clean and lube service (and to take pictures to document a reuild). It is pretty much mandatory on a LHD car to remove the pedals for clearance to get the wiper motor out. If you only do this once or twice in a lifetime you probably have patience and put it back as original.

But if you are doing any modification, such as installing a two speed motor, it is a golden opportunity to change the mounting. You can install the motor at the other end of the drive tube, mounting it to the inside of the firewall above the passenger's knees. This only requires fabrication of a mounting bracket (or modification of the original bracket), and forming a new connector tube. Move the original stub pipe from the right to the left side, and re-form (cut and flare) the left pipe for use on the right side. Then you can relocate the wiper motor branch of the wiring harness from left to right side and run it through the firewall with an appropriate rubber grommet.

It isn't concours, but it would sure give easier access for servicing the wiper motor in a LHD car.

Thanks Andy and Barney - I'll try your advise and remove the pedals. Just did an install (this morning)of K&N filters following another area of Barney's site, and the only problem I had was not reading his instructions carefully the first time!
