MG MGA - Wiper motor paint details
Happy New Year everyone. Can someone tell me the correct colour for the wiper motor/gearbox on an MGA? The photos in the Clausager book are not that clear as this item is hidden under the edge of the left side body. One looks to be silver, while another looks silver with the motor cover in black. His text does not mention the original paint colour. I have two of these wiper motors and both are painted silver, but they seem to have been repainted after they were made by LUCAS. Barney's site describes the motor and gearbox brilliantly, but does not mention the colour. Thanks, Peter. |

Peter I think mine is original. The central casing on it is black and the bits at both ends are natural alloy. Steve |

Peter, here's a picture of mine before I started the restoration and then after. From the origianl photo it looks silverish or though it's a little difficult to tell with the rust. I think I media blasted the casing and then clear coated it. I don't remember painting it silver and it doesn't look painted either. Interesting question perhaps you'll get more definative answers. I'm fairly certain the center wrap is painted with black crinkled paint with both ends left unpainted. At least that's the why mine looked before I restored it. Like Andy's mine was pretty rough but I could see enough to figure it was similar to the one way the one one my '57 TR3 was painted. Good luck getting the crinkle paint to finish correctly. If yout don't put the paint coats on too thick, a hair dryer will make the finish turn out better. Cheers! |

I had very good results with Krylon Black Crinkle Coat by curing it with a heat gun. I don't think a hair dryer gets hot enough to do the job. Cheers, GTF |

I am not convinced that the wiper motor was crinkle painted. Mine looks original and is just a plain cellulose black. Steve |

The picture subbmitted by Andy looks to me to be as it left the factory. It is just left in natural finish to rust as required. Why would the factory paint it? |

Yes, it looks like it had some kind of phosphate or nickel/cad plating. I have a couple of originals tucked away from unmolested cars, I'll have a look tomorrow. |
