MG MGA - Wiper motor works intermittently and running hot

When the wiper motor has been running about 5 - 10 minutes the motor stop (often in the park position)and will not be starting for a period of 2 to 10 minutes - and then again run for about 5 minutes until the next stop.

The motor draws about. 3.2 amps during operation and will be hot - (60 C) on the outer side
The wiper motor has been disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and equipped with new brushes.
The output drive cable, connecting tubing and gearbox are also cleaned and lubricated.

Where should I look for errors - it is a replacement of the wiper motor amatur?

Thanks

When I refurbished my wiper motor a few months ago I measured the motor resistance at 4 ohms and working current at 2.7 amps. The fact that this is lower than your 3.2 A maybe not significant because my battery may not have been charged as well as yours. I think if I had your symptoms I would do the following after coming in from a longish run with the engine compartment already hot. First remove the wiper arms then disconnect all three wires to the motor and connect your battery to terminals 1 and 2 with separate external leads. This would eliminate your car's wiring, dashboard switch and internal parking switch. Leave the motor running for half an hour or so and if it stops then the fault is inside the motor.

With the motor dismantled have a probe around and if you can't see any obvious poor connections then I would look around for a new motor. I would think the chances of finding spares are pretty remote now...............................Mike

There is still a pretty healthy supply of good used motors going through ebay. As you have the gears already you can buy any of the similar units from cars of the period. As you probably already know, new brushes are also available and you have those...

Jorgen, you could always fit an MGB 2 speed motor. It isnt as hard to fit as you would think and they work really well.

Lots of information about this subject in the archives and in Barneys MGA GURU website.

Hi,

Not sure if the MGA wipoer motor has a thermal cut out like the DR3 and 3A's on the Mk2 Jags, might be that playing up?

I seem to recall it was in line with the live supply to the switch on the jag.

Was fitted to cut the motor out if it got jammed by snow etc.

Just a thought
