MG MGA - Wire wheel hubs- grease retainers
As part of general maintenance, I have forced some grease through to the outer wheel bearing of my front wire wheel hubs (Mk2). I intend using the grease cups that for some reason are only listed with the twin cam, so that I can leave some extra grease there that may get drawn in. I remember years ago with other cars, I would always fill the grease cup with grease.
But I don’t have, nor have ever had, the grease retainer (part ATB4131) and I see that Moss don’t even stock them. So I am wondering if they are necessary. I believe the original intention was to prevent grease leaking out to the brakes from the hub - that is through the hole in the hub for the split pin (for castle nut). But I am wondering if the wheel sitting on the hub would prevent grease escaping that way anyway. Can I ask what is current opinion on the the need for the grease retainer, please? Thanks |

I put them back on my Coupe when I restored it. I can’t say if they are necessary but didn’t want to take a chance. MGOC has them in stock. https://www.mgocspares.co.uk/product/atb4131/retainer?nodePath=1/3/779/898/899/2659 Jim |

Jim Thanks for the response. They seem ridiculously expensive at £30 plus shipping for a pair. But I guess you are right about not taking a chance as my life is possibly worth more, but I hate getting ripped off. Maybe I will add it to my next order. But be interested to find out what others do and think - I will ask on the "dark side" |
