MG MGA - Wiring the front lights
I bought a harness from Moss about 10 years ago and am finally getting around to the front lights. My harness has the following wires: Right Side: Brown/white (1) Red/Yellow (1) Blue (1) and also: Blue/red (2)female Blue/white (2)female Red (2) On the left side: Blue/red (1) male Blue/white (1) male Green (1) Red (1) Blue (1) and Blue/red (1) Blue/white (1) My wires coming from the lights are: Right side headlight: Blue/white Blue/red Black Right side parking light Black Red Green Left side headlight Blue/white Blue/red Black Left side parking light Black Red Green My question is why does the harness have two of the blue/white and blue/red female stubs on the right and just one of each (and male) on left side? The thing is too short to reach over to catch the left lights. Also, when connecting two male bullet ends, is there a connector to use here? and should they be soldered? Thanks much. Harley |

See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_d.htm Notice the 3-way connections at upper right in the diagram. Where wires join, use snap connectors. For number of snap connectors and locations see here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/circ_snap.htm |

Thanks Barney for those great visuals. I am still wondering why my harness has the dual-tube female snap connectors on the right side. Does one of the tubes remain unused? Harley |

An important thing to remember about the MGA wiring harness is that there are no internal junctions. All places where 3 wires are shown connected, are not burried inside the harness. So in this case, there is a feed wire from the switch that has to go to both lamps. It just so happens that on the right side, the wires going to the lamp are in the same wrapping as the feed from the switch and have to be connected together. This is where the LH harness connects to the main harness. If you have the single bullet already snapped to the wires on the RH side, they have to be removed and replaced with the double ones as Barney and RJ have shown. This leaves one opening in the double connector that gets unused. I think that is right. |

It is really worth buying one of the special tools to get the bullets into the connectors. It is then a simple squeeze to get them sitting correctly. No danger of damaging the insulation or having a short because a bullet is not properly seated. And every single one is done correctly in seconds. http://www.autosparks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1014 |
