MG MGA - Wrong water pump?
I've been keeping a spare water pump for years as a replacement but I had a closer look at it the other day and found that its longer than my MGA pump - the length from pulley flange to base is about 10.5 cm. Everything else looks the same so if its not MGA can any sharp eyed member identify it?

Been thinking about this one JH, I believe that the early MGB water pump is longer than the std MGA one. I have noticed that in my A which has an early 3 bearing MGB engine fitted, the radiator has had to be spaced forward a little to clear the water pump fan pulley. I understand that the pump fits and works fine but you may have fan clearance/ radiator issues if you use it. Can anyone else confirm this? Colyn |

I have an early B engine in my MGA and when the pump failed I ordered a B pump to replace it only to find that the failed pump was from the MGA and the new pump was too long. It took a further two goes to get the right pump. So there are at least 3 slightly different ones and only the MGA one actually fits |

From my experience with fitting an 1800 to my "A", selecting the correct pump is not just getting a pump that fits behind the radiator. It's also getting a pump that allows the pulleys to align. Ken |

Thanks for responses, I'll post it on the MGB site and see if those guys recognize it. |
