MG MGA - Wrongly Named Master Cylinder Parts
Sitting here waiting for new master cylinder parts to arrive, I thought I would read through the braking system chapter in the official BMC Workshop Manual, also have a look at the diagrams in that book plus the MC diagram in the Service Parts List book. Guess what? The books cannot agree which of the seals is the primary and which is the secondary. In one diagram (page M4) of workshop manual it refers to one set of cup seals as the 'cup-secondary-piston'. Three pages on (M7) it refers to the same seals as 'Master Cup'. Over in the Service Parts List Plate MB has the same seal described as 'Cup-Piston (Secondary)'. Just as well that the 2 sets of seals in the MC are so obviously different that they cannot be fitted incorrectly. I can understand different technical authors having the occasional variation between books, but to give an item a different name and purpose in the same chapter of the same book is a big no no in my view. May be I am being too pedantic, but having spent 2 years of my flying career helping write flight crew manuals, check lists, emergency procedures and checklists I would have been castigated if any of my written descriptions and actions were left open to interpretation or doubt.
