MG MGA - WW balancing
Does anyone have the drawing of an adapter to fit Wire wheels to the balancing machines? |

I use an old front splined hub machined out down the middle so it fits the spindle on the balance machine. |

I have the set of spindles to adapt our WW for modern balancing machines. They are sold by the MGOC. I will dig them out sometime today, photograph and measure them up if that helps. Not used them yet so cannot comment about their accuracy. My WW are still well in balance from when Bob West did them about 4 years ago. Steve |

Thanks Steve, drawing would be great. Art |

Ian I will start off with a photo so you know what you are letting yourself in for if you are intending to make up a set. They are made from a hard plastic composite. The male tapered cone goes onto the balancer first. It has a 40mm ID hole. The two slip bushes are for machines that may have 36mm shafts instead of 40mm. The wheel then goes on the shaft (inner side facing the taper), then the female cone (groove towards the wheel), then the balancer nut. This is the MGOC page: http://www.mgocspares.co.uk/acatalog/MGOC_SPARES_NUTS___SPINNERS___TOOLS__midget__206.html#a35173W_2dW179 Look between items 26 and 27. They charge £69.95 ! Steve |

Ian Not sure if you live anywhere near me as your name and address appear to have corrupted and show as "l small, threadlist, tables1" If you are reasonably close you are welcome to borrow the kit. Steve |

Ian Please excuse my technical drawing. 55 years since I did it at school. Two diagrams, one in this post and one in the next. Steve |

Thanks Steve. Not sure what has happened to the web site, but I'm in Ontario! Art Pearse |

What size of errors could occur using the balancer without the adapter? the back of the hub registers to the machine backplate anbd is centred by an inside cone on the other end. How much off centre could this possibly be and what is the equivalent out of balance in terms of rim weight? I tried to post this as a new thread, but it did not appear to work! Art |

Art I found significant errors. The chamfered part of the hub gives the correct fit, not the back. I had noticeable out of balance having it done that way and eventually went to Bob West who had set up his machine specifically for WW. Steve |

More for the benefit of other UK WW owners (MGA, MGB, Healey and I believe Jags) this is Bob West's bit of kit. Next time I need to balance I would seriously consider the 250 mile trek up the road to let him do them. Similar set-up I guess to AB (second post) over in Oz. I recall that Bob has cornered the Yorkshire area. Mine are still brilliant 6 years on. Steve |

I went to an British swap meet or auto jumble and bought and old front hub and a beat up knock off. I went to a machine shop and had the hub machined to make the center hallow and took off extra metal on the outside to lighten it to make it smaller and lighter. I now store it on my spare tire so it is always with the car. The cost of the parts was $3 for the knock off and $10 for the hub plus the machining. I now can have my wheel balanced at any tire shop as many do not want to do wire wheel for the fear of damaging them. |

Art, Where in Ontario are you? Some of the tire shops in my area have cones for the W/W's. ... CR |

Colin (?) I'm just outside of Brockville. |

Well, Brockville is too far away from Brantford for you to take advantage of our local tire shops. And yes it is Colin...lol I have two cars with W/W's so I bit the bullet and bought a set of cones that I take with me when balancing is needed. ... CR |

OK here's my plan, based on Jeff Becker's. I have an old MGB WW front hub. I cut off the cylindrical part that is to the inside of the disc brake flange. This leaves this flange as the mating surface to the balancing machine flange. I open up the hub interior to clear the 40mm balancer spindle - note this is to clear the spindle only, not register with it. I open out the knock-off so that it exposes the outside end of the hub. The knock=off is used to mount the WW on the hub as usual. The balance cone cenres the hub using the ID of the MGB hub, which is a machined surface. With any luck I can do this work w/o engaging a machine shop. Art |
