MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Shopping list for RHD-LHD conversion

Hi all,

Does anybody know what parts I precisely need to convert my RHD GT V8 to a LHD? Anybody interested in a possible trade of parts (dashboard etc.)?
Safety fast!

Joost

Joost

O Joost...do you really want to do this? I have had my own B GT V8 converted and it has led to a lot of trouble.
Are you planning on doing all the work yourself?
You are not the one in the black r/b gt v8, working in Nieuwegein, by the way?

I'm in process of converting a '63 from LHD to RHD...found RHD dash & steering & have them here in Alabama...think I need a RHD turn signal switch & cowl....do you have extras?
anthony barnhill

Anthony,
There is no difference between LHD and RHD turn signal switches that I know of. I converted my '66 to RHD years ago and ordered my rack, brake and clutch pipes and cowl from the MGOC on the cheap. The cowl softened and distorted within 6 months, BTW. I also use my headlamp flasher (in conjuntion with a latching relay) as the high beam/low beam switch because I didn't like the odd position of the foot switch or the fact that it takes up room in the narrower right side footwell.

David...so just turn the swirch around? Then why can't I just turn the cowl over?
anthony barnhill

Before I commissioned the work (and sadly also after the Deed was Done) I talked it through with specialists.
If you want to have something to read on the conversion: http://home.tiscali.nl/fdegroot/mg_index_page.htm
Under RHD-LHD conversion you will find the details.

Joost,

As these normally change LHD to RHD may be worth a call

Paul (are all V8's on their way to Holland)
Paul

Since Brits don't pay an appropriate price for original V8's, it's better we scoop them up!
Joost, I would really recommend to stick with RHD and spend your money on other items. Or just keep it in the pocket. It's not worth it.

Thanks a lot everybody for your reactions.
Unless we are all going to drive our cars on the WRONG (no offence) side of the road over here as well, I really think that a LHD conversion will make the V8 a better useable and safer daily driver.
Frank, why do you oppose so much against a LHD conversion? What were the major problems you bumped into with your conversion? (I really like your website BTW, especially the sound of that wonderful V8 engine!)

Excellent website Frank!
Didn't find the V8 sound file though.

Alex (in Flanders)

It runs at start-up of the website, you can't find it on the site. By the way: where in Flanders are you? The B is sometimes treated with a little stretch of Ardennen-road. Keeps him fit :-)

To be honest: I was the one who want my car to be lhd. My ex-girlfriend opposed it. Even now she compares it to trans-sexuality: "It is not right. He wasn't born that way, and there's nothing wrong with it! His steering was just fine!"

Anthony,
Sorry for the delay. Yep, just flip the switch to the right side of the column. The bottom half of the cowl has a bulge for the wiring harness molded in so you'll need a proper RHD piece.
