MG MGB Technical - # 9 rule
I adjusted the lifters on my 79 MGB this weekend using the #9 rule. It worked realo well. But I still have noise comming form # 3 & 6 lifters. I went through the adjustment several times and all the other seem ok. This is a newly rebuilt enging and head with only about 600 miles one it. Any ideas on why #3 & 6 lifters would still make noise |

The pad on the rocker arm can wear such that your feeler gauge "bridges" the worn spot. You think you have the correct clearance, but it is actually greater. The gunson "Clikadjust" tool will avoid this proble. Check out: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/Clikadjust_0.html |

I've found with mine that the supposedly ideal 'rule of nine' point is less than ideal on some of my valves as the gap is bigger one side or other of it. So now I set the clearances at POMG, or Point Of Maximum Gap. |

OK, I give up, what is #9 rule? |

If the rocker shaft is not new, it could be the source of noise. It seems to be the most forgotten part when engines are reconditioned. Rgds Kevin |

Robert, #9 rule is that you adj the #1 valve with #8 open - #2 with #7 open etc. Number always adds up to 9. |
