MG MGB Technical - 1977 Brake Master
A friends master cylinder has gone on his 77-B. I have re-built plenty of the early ones but none for this year. Is it easy enough to re-build or should I just get him a new one? THANKS***STEVE C. |

Steve, I just replaced mine, but that's only because I was to lazy to refurbish it, and it had been standing for a while. Garreth |

Steve. It is easier to rebuild than the 68-74(?) non-servo type master cylinders. It can be done in a couple of hours, cleaning everything and taking your time. One thing to watch out for is the second set of O rings, the ones that go on the balance rod which activates the brake warning light. I have seen several master cylinder rebuilds where this section of the MC was not rebuilt, causing brake fluid to leak out through the switch--damaged paint and air into the system. I would recommend you try to rebuild the MC to your friends car. Just lay out the pieces as you disassemble the MC. If you have a digital camera or a Polaroid, take some photos as a "just in case". It is a good learning experience and it may work. However, with these cars being over 20 years old, I am replacing the old MCs with new ones on my cars. That should give another 20+ years off good usage. Les |
