MG MGB Technical - 5speed to original MGB Motor?
I have seen kits available to mate a Ford Type N/9 to a MGB motor, but I would like to know if there are any other adpater type bellhousings or kits to mate other 5 speeds to the MGB motor. I have been able to find out very little about the Ford type N gearbox and how strong or durable it is, as well as other important information. I would like to use more common T5 or T50 transmissions that many people use for V8-215/Rover conversions with my STOCK MGB 4cylinder engine. If I were to purchase a Ford Type N/9 5 speed kit for my MGB I would want the opposite to be true as well. Meaning if I were to replace my stock motor with a 215 or Rover, I would want to know if I could retain the Ford Type N 5 speed and find the correct adapters to use it. If anybody has any information about the Ford Type N used with a 215/Rover, or the Borg-Warner T5 or T50 used with the stock MGB 4 cylinder.....please email or let me know!! Thanks to everyone who helps make this BBS site so informative! |

Jereme- Rivergate has a complete kit to mate a Datsun/Nissan 280Z 5 speed. Their web site is very detailed on the subject. www.rivergate5.com or www.rivergate5speed.com (not sure which) Ben 70 MG B-GT |

Jereme, There is a company, Hi-Gear Engineering, trading in the UK which provides adapters and other parts to fit the Ford Type 9 5-speed gearbox, used in the Ford Sierra car in Europe, into MGs. Kits are available for MGA, MGB, ZA/ZB Magnette and TD/TF midgets. I don't have a web-site for them but they can be contacted at: Hi-Gear Engineering Ltd 82 Chestnut Avenue Mickleover Derby DE3 5FS Tel/Fax (+44) 1332-514503 Hope this is what you are looking for. Here's another one for the list, it uses a Toyota Supra box http://www.conversioncomp.co.nz/products.htm They do have adaptors for the Rover V8 as well as a bunch of other stuff too. |

HI Guys The Hi-Gear kit that is sold here in the USA uses the type 9 Ford 5 speed. This transmission is ideal for the MGB and the other variants that it fits, however, the maximum power that the unit will take is around 175bhp. So as a stock B tranny it has spare capacity. If a 215 were fitted then it would be marginal with only a slightly warmed up motor. The T5 (either one) would be a better bet in this case, or try the Nissan 280 unit. It will handle masses of power and torque, especially if you get one out of the twin turbo car!. Regards John |

Thank you everyone for all the great information! John.....Do you know of a place to get anymore information about using the Nissan 280z transmission with a Buick 215 motor? This sounds like a great option!! If the Nissan 280z transmission is strong enough, I could use the transmission initially with my stock MGB, and then when I finally get the 215 done, use the same transmission for it. |

Hi Jereme The only people i know of that does the 280z conversion for both the stock B motor and the 215 is the outfit in New Zealand (see Jareds mail) They may have an outlet in the USA but i have not heard of them being available over here. You could always import the kit without the tranny and purchase that locally, this will save you a lot of money on the shipping etc. John |
