MG MGB Technical - 73 gt steering rack play
I have a 73 gt which seems to have alot more play in the steering wheel than my B. I have tried adjusting shims and have replaced bushings and tie-rods. Had the front in aligned. I have been told that the inner tie rod nut may need to be tightned. Can this be done with the rack in the car ? |

Yes it can. |

I tightened mine with the rack in the car. There are procedures for adjusting in the manuals. However, my inner tie rod ball and socket were worn flat. If I took the play out then the rod was too stiff. I solved it with a new rack. |

I am still trying to sort out my steering play issue. I went ahead and installed a new rack. This seemed to help some but I still have some play that seems to be above the universal and below the steering wheel.Could it be in the collapsible colum ? |

Yes, it is a possibility. RAY |

If the play is indicated by the ability to move the steering wheel vertically and/or horizontally the problem is almost certainly the top bearing in the column. The ball bearings used in the 1968 through 1974 US speck columns were pretty crappy by design. I may be able to help you if you contact me by email at gmasterman@aol.com |
