MG MGB Technical - A note for Steve S in VA, Bradley in NY, and James
Back in the fall, we passed a few notes about stuff from a 77 B that I bought for parts. My deal when I bought it was that I didn’t have to pick it up until after the winter, so stretching the point a bit, I picked it up 2 or 3 weeks ago. In the fall I offered the hard top for $200, and Steve S expressed interest. I indicated that I might be taking a trip to Parkersburg, WVA at some time, and also mentioned that I go to Evansville, IN once a month (I live near Louisville, KY). Steve asked for pictures, but I don’t have a digital camera, and haven’t tried to borrow one. Later, James mentioned he might be interested in the hard top, and I told him that Steve had the first right of refusal. The trip to Parkersburg has not yet happened, it might happen in the future, as might a trip to VA, but those trips are low priority items and I don’t know if and when it might happen. So, to Steve, you responded first on the hard top so you have first dibs, but I have no idea when I might be coming your way and I suspect that shipping would put it out of reasonable price range (your call). Because I have now picked up the car, the top is kind of in the way, and I have some incentive to sell it off just to make room. It is not impossible for me to store it for a while, but I don’t want to sit on it for too long. Perhaps you have some plan to be near Kentucky? And, maybe if you are as fastidious about other technologies as you seem to be with your MGs, you have last year’s model digital camera that you might want to trade, eh? Please give me a clue as to your level of interest so that I know if I should try to hold it for you. The weather stripping around the roll up windows, across the windshield, and across the rear deck is in very poor condition. New weather stripping is available for this exact top, but it is not cheap. It is something like $200 for the correct kit. Perhaps it is generic and could be bought elsewhere, but I have not looked into it. James, if Steve is not interested, you have second right of refusal assuming you get in touch in a reasonable amount of time. You asked about my bottom dollar. $200 is my bottom dollar. If it doesn’t bring that, I will find a place to store it. Bradley: I checked the clock, and it is dead. I need the headlight switch. That leaves the steering column cowl and the hazard switch that you were interested in. Contact me and we can discuss the details. Also, please let me know if you are no longer interested. Since I am discussing parts sales on the forum instead of in the classified section, I suspect it would be more appropriate for you all to contact me directly via my e-mail. I would have done the same, but I have no e-mail for Steve. If someone else is interested, and those mentioned above are not, then certainly the stuff is available to anyone. On a happy note, this 77 B had very little rust in the shell. It seems that only the section of the floorboards forward of the seats were rusted. The inner and outer rockers as well as the dog legs are solid with no Bondo, and the wheel wells and trunk are all nice. From the time I bought it I had hopes of selling the shell to someone who was contemplating a major rust repair job on their B, and tonight I made an agreement with just such a person. For $100 he will save a pile of work and money, and I will have done my duty to the breed by not scrapping it. Charley |
