MG MGB Technical - Air filter oil?
Hi all. I recently bought a pair of pancake air filters for my '73 BGT. The grey foam inside comes dry. This kind of foam is exactly the same as I use on my offroad bike air filter. But on the bike I must use special air filter oil. Question is: Do I need to oil them on the B? Or since the B is not an offroader I can leave them dry? Thanks. Cheers, Valter ('73 MG BGT and '99 MGF VVC owner). |

Foam filters don't get oiled. |

The foam is generally not oiled but if you want to you can. I'd use the same stuff you use on your motorbike. A "sock" like made for off-roaders may also be desireable if you live/drive in a dusty place (like Nevada). The foam tends to break down over time. Many have reported the foam is quite abrasive and suspicions abound that it has caused premature engine failure. Personally, I feel that the pancake filters with foam elements are inferior to the stock setup (for which you can get a K&N element if you want higher flow). Mike! |

It depends on the filter -- some foam filters require oil. I had an Amsoil filter on another car that required oiling with special, incredibly sticky, oil. Your best bet would be to ask the manufacturer or retailer what to do. FWIW, I'm running stock cans with K&N filters on my B... |
