MG MGB Technical - air filter which one is best for SUs
I am thinking of fitting another air filter to my mgb 1980 it has the orginal ones at the moment what one would be best? My primarly concern is fuel economy so i would like the one that will provide the best improvement to economy rather than performance although in my ignorance i would have guessed that would be the same although i dont really know. |

jim. What do you mean the "orginal ones"? Where are you located. North American specification MGBs, i.e. the majority of the ones produced, have only one air filter. The MGB was designed to be a performance car, not an economy car. My younger daughter's Miata gets better fuel economy than my MGBs. But is not as much fun to drive. What are you looking for and where are you located? How is your car set up now? Keeping the foot off the pedal, the old "drive like you had an egg between the foot and the accelerator pedal" will provide better fuel economy. However, if I ever reach that stage, I will cut out beer (Foster's and Guiness) before I quit driving my sports car as a sports car. Les |

I've been using the standard-issue Crosslands filters with good results - as long as you replace them on schedule. There are more free flowing filters out there (K&N of course), but they're expensive and you may or may not notice the difference. If you have the old filter canisters (I'm assuming you have dual SU's here) and are concerned about their appearance, they DO clean up to bare metal easily with a wire brush. A couple of coats of epoxy black chassis paint makes them look nearly new. |
