MG MGB Technical - Aluminum Body Panels

I have seem some aluminum panels for midgets available. Does anyone have a line on panels (other than bonnets) for MGB.

Shareef Hassan

Shareef,

If I remember correctly, Frontline Costello do an alloy fuel tank for the MGB.

I have seen a well made aluminium door skin for sale on a stall at a show so they exist but I don't know who makes them.

In the US you could try www.fast-mg.com If they don't do them they will know who does. Otherwise you could try either MG Motorsport or Brown and Gammons over here. If any additional aluminium panels were used by the factory and hermologated before the end of 1965 you may find that Jim Lowery at Historique (www.historique.freeserve.co.uk) can help you.

Good luck

Shareef; If you can locate a good race car fabrication shop in your area they should have an English wheel and the know how to make door skins. I mention this because at our recent Loch Norman car show in Mooresville, NC there was an Aston Martin DB 5 that had been owner restored, the car took best of show honors. The owner made his aluminum door skins, I asked if he had an English wheel and he replied he knew someone who did. He also made his connely leather interior with a commercial sewing machine. It was obvious from his car that this Aston Martin owner was a very skilled craftsman. FWIW, Clifton

Hi all.

As a Land-Rover owner I am all too familiar with differential metal corrosion, which occurs when you put steel and ali together and apply water (especially salty water).

If you do take the ali route and use the car in the wet, you need to take precautions to prevent this.

It is worth noting that ali is a little more difficult to get the first coat of paint to stick to, special primers are needed.

The Panel Shop in Stratford, CT can make anything you want in aluminum. Just bring some $$$ and give them plenty of time.
