MG MGB Technical - Annoying knocks

When on the road especially bumpy uneven road surfaces I am hearing annoying knocks and bangs coming from the rear end of my roadster. I have had a look underneath and thought I had cured it as the exhaust was close to the shock drop arm but moving the exhaust over a little has not stopped all of it. Cannot see any other cause but wondered if the rear shocks could be the cause even though they look O K, Any other suggestions would be welcome. Trev

Can you replicate the knocking by bouncing the car?
If so disconnect the dampers from the bottom plate and try again.
Loose dampers.
Look for tell tales on the exhaust and axle. Dampers might not be controlling rebound.
Check the soundness of the exhaust to body mounts.

Trevor. Are you sure the knocking is coming from the rear? My 79 had a very loud knock when it went over a pot hole or speed bump. It turned out to be the front X-member pads.

The pads are sold as a set of 8 for the X-member -black poly composition. Moss Motors sells this kit as part# 281-415.

As Allan and Gary has put, damper links too, and sounds at rear can be at front, also you can get a cacophony of sounds that need eliminating to get to track down the main annoying sound.

From recent Spridget thread - check all nuts, bolts and fixing are tight, check springs and shackle, number plate, bumper mounts, bushes and pads, brake and petrol hoses and solid lines are secure.

Might sound stupid but if you're one of the type to carry lots of spares or stuff in your boot then totally empty everything in the boot out just in case it's one of those items.

Could be absolutely anything including stuff loose in the boot and batteries.

Allan's advice is best, if you can't reproduce it like that these things can go on for years. I've had one for 20 years or more, only seems to happen when we are touring away from home, not locally or repeatable where I could stand a chance of diagnosing it.

Just to add my two cents (cdn), I recently had a knock that drove me crazy, going over a bump made it sound like the rearend was about to join us inside (Mgbgt) and what I found was a combination of things. The shackle bushing needed to be replaced but the major contributor was the front spring bushing. The rubber interior had disintegrated and every bump or pothole allowed the spring to bang around.

Many things can contribute to strange noises but this was what mine turned out to be and a really easy fix.

Enjoy the "B"
