MG MGB Technical - Bad Rear Wheel Brake Cylinders
There are some aftermarket rear brake cylinders which are improperly machined. The problem is the location of the bleed nipple hole which is drilled too low on the cylinder back. It will not align properly with the bleed nipple hole in the back plate. These are made by Centrix, in Italy. I just checked four cylinders and are are incorrectly machined and cannot be installed. The Auto Specialty brand and Lockheed wheel cylinders are correct and will bolt up without problems. The Centrix wheel cylinders were purchased from BAP. They will, I am told, do a recall and remove the Centrix MGB wheel cylinders from their stock. Les |

Is this a different difference to that between roadster and GT wheel cylinders, which have the locating peg in different places because the GT items have a larger bore? |

Paul. No, it is not. The distance from the outer edge of the brake line attachment boss (which fits through the backplate and to which the circlip is attached) to the edge of the locating pin is .250" on the roadster and .398" on the GT. Thus, the two wheel cylinders are sufficiently different that you could not bolt one up to the wrong back plate. In this case, the wheel cylinder locating pin was correctly located, the circlip and brake line could be installed, but the hole for the bleed screw was sufficiently out of spec that the bleed nipple could not be installed. Since Lockheed and AutoMec wheel cylinders would bolt up to the backplate and allow the installation of the bleed nipple, but the Centrix ones would not, it is a problem with the Centrix cylinders being improperly manufactured. Okey-dokey, although I think you meant 'yes it is' (a different difference). |
