MG MGB Technical - Blinkin' indicators

Hi

I have a mk2 bgt and have problems with the indicators on the passenger side. Have noticed that it doesn't blink very fast on that side recently. This weekend it stopped blinking all together - the rear indicator light just stays on but the front indicator doesn't come on at all. Other side is fine and headlights/sidelights work fine.

what could be causing this?

cheers guys
Dave

Dave, You should read the archives as this problem has been discussed many times. It sounds like your problem is a bad ground wire/connection. First check the bulbs. Then check the front blinker wiring and all connections. Since it has stopped all together, I would assume a corroded or maybe even a cut wire. Check where the wires up front run in through a hole under the horns. This is where the wires connect on both sides for the blinkers, headlights and side marker lights. You did not say what year your car is, but I would strongly suggest spending a day and checking all of your lights and light wiring. It would be a day well spent. But, in summary, it sounds like a ground problem and I would suggest you read the archives. Good luck.

A Mk2 has no ground wire to the combined side/flasher units, it relies on the physical fixings, as do the rear lamp units on all models. As Sherlock Holmes said it is a case of "the dog that didn't bark in the night" that is the problem i.e. the lamp that isn't lighting. As well as the ground connection it could be a bad connection in the green/white (RHS) or green/red (LHS) connector by the headlight on the faulty side. I installed my front side/flasher units with double nuts - one in front of the panel and one behind - whih has the effect of clamping tightly onto the wing and getting a good connection, although I did mine that way to space them out a bit so the chrome bezel didn't cut into the paintwork.
