MG MGB Technical - Brake Grease
Does anyone know what kind of grease is used for use on the rubber components when rebuliding your brakes? You can get it from Moss in the little Sachets for about 2 bucks. I was just wondering if it was a certain kind of grease that you could get in a tube from the auto parts store. Thanks, James

Use only brake fluid to lubricate the subber parts when rebuilding. No grease should be introduced to the rubber parts in brake and clutch

James, Any parts store should be able to supply you with Brake Assembly Fluid. I buy it in 12 oz plastic bottles and use it on all brake system rubber also radiator and heater hoses. Leland

Brake grease is usually used on metal-to-metal contact surfaces to reduce squeal.

When I worked at a Jaguar dealership we had under a Jag part number (sorry -- don't remember the number) a red paste in a tube called "Girling Hydraulic Assembly Lube" or some such. It was specified for assembling clutch & brake hydraulics and was stated to be compatible with DOT 3 & 4 hydraulic fluids (i.e. brake fluid.) Could this be what you're referring to?

Just went digging and found a tube of the special goo. As I said, I got it at a Jag dealership.... Anyway, front of the tube reads: Genuine Castrol Girling RUBBER GREASE Specially prepared by CASTROL for GIRLING Made in England The back reads: This grease is specially prepaired (sic) for use with all GIRLING HYDRAULIC brake cylinderS and may be used safely without harmful effect on natural rubber seals and dust covers. WARNING Absolute cleanliness is essential when handling Hydraulic Components. ------------- Never allow ordinary grease to contact any part of the Hydraulic system. ------------- For all Girling Hydraulic Brakes use on genuine Castrol Girling Crimson Brake Fluid. ------------- GIRLING LTD Sales & Service BIRMINGHAM ROAD WEST BROMWICH STAFFS CODE 64947010 (NOTE -- the code quoted above is not the Jag part number -- as I recall it was JLM- something. Hope this helps... RCE)

Of interest Lockheed used to supply exactly the same type of red 'Rubber Lube'. Whilst sold in small round tins, smaller than tobacco tins, I would not be surprised to find that this came from the same original source. Lockheed is now part of Delphi so a web search there may help. Rog

Guys: I've wondered what that official red rubber grease really is that you find in those little sachets? I know that you are not supposed to use "regular" petroleum based grease, but I’ve wondered if that red stuff is just synthetic grease. Awhile back I bought a tube of that red synthetic grease and have been using it in my grease gun. I’ve also been using it as a substitute for rubber grease and I haven’t been able to detect that it has caused any problems or deterioration in rubber parts. If this red synthetic grease is the same as or would work as rubber grease then this would be a good source for the stuff for our needs. What do you think? As usual, I’m not recommending this until we get other opinions. See ‘ya in the garage… Aconite Blue
