MG MGB Technical - Brake hydraulics maintenance
1981 MGB: earlier this year I replaced the rear brake cylinders and rear flex hose to get the car through the MOT. Some work on the front brakes is long overdue: I’m going to replace the front flex hoses (these were last replaced in 1992), but I’m wondering what, if anything, I should do to the callipers which, although in good working order, still have their original seals and pistons. |

I wouldn't replace them if they are working well, you could introduce problems by doing so. I only change hoses when they show the first signs of surface cracking - and I've only had to do that once on one car. Also needs them to be rubber. I'm not a fan of braided, for road use at any rate, as if they are rubber cored you can't see it, and who knows what they might be like given braided oil gauge hose failures. Teflon cored should be OK, I did fit those to the V8 recently as for various reasons I had no choice, but wouldn't have chosen to. |
