MG MGB Technical - Brake Lighrt

I have a 1977 roadster. The brake light does not light up.I am wondering if it is an idiot light for problems or should it light up when the hand brake is used? How does one change the bulb, if that is what it needs? Can anyone tell me what the light is supposed to signify?
Thanks
Chris

I have a 77 roadster, and the brake light comes on when i put on the parking brake.

The later MGB's have a combined handbrake and loss of pressure warning light which should come on during starting (as a check of the bulb). Have a look at the following site which gives a good overview of the systems. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/brake.html

Does anyone know how to get at the bulb at the back of the brake light in front of the steering wheel?

You reach up behind the light and pull it out. Difficult if you do not have very small hands. You can also remove the speedometer and have easier access, but not great. The bulb holder is held in place with a metal toothed ring which pushes on from the back side and this may sometimes be removed, but is difficult to get back on tightly. I can see when the handbrake is on. I have had the brake system fail a couple of times over the years. I always knew when the brake system failed by the feel of the pedal. The light came on after I had already become aware of the problem. So, if the brake warning light burns out, I leave it that way and do not worry about it. I only worry about that light working if I am selling a car, which happens very, very rarely. Les

I know I do nto have brake problems. My retentive nature demands that the light works! It will drive me nuts until it does. Anyone know the size?
Thanks Les and all those who answered.
