MG MGB Technical - Brake Light Wiring
Recently, I removed the rear lights and side markers to paint my 1972 MGB. Upon reinstallation, I carefully matched the wires in the rear harness as best as I could. The rear lights and side markers work. However, when I use the brake lights, the right rear brake light illuminates as well as the right front directional lamp. The left brake light does not work. I did not remove the front directionals and sidemarker lamps. The front sidemarker lamps have also quit. headlamps work fine. Any ideas why or how my brake light could trigger a front directional lamp to illuminate? |

I have just painted my midget as well and had to go through all the fun of re wiring the rear of my car. Your problem is that you have the brake light voltage going to your blinker, The voltage is trying to go to ground through your blinker wire. There are a few ground wires in the rear that have to be attached, with that the juice will take the path of less resistance and go to ground, everything should work then. With any wiring problem, you need a test lamp, and if possible a diagram (well worth it). Then it is up to you to fiddle until you find the right mix and proper path. A brick on the brake peddle should do the trick. If that is the only problem, then you have 3 or 4 wires at the most to switch around and mess with, no worries. Neil |
