MG MGB Technical - Brake MC and steering rack source
I'm trying to locate a brake MC for a 68 MGB for less than the $150+ from Moss or the resellers. NAPA, Bumper to Bumper, etc have them listed for around $50 but can never get them. I don't have a core, either. I "fixed" that trying to get the nylon bushing out. Don't ask...it was one of those nights. Then I need some steering rack parts or an entire new/rebuilt steering rack for a 78 MGB. Moss lists the complete unit and all the major components as N/A. Any suggestions on suppliers of the above parts is appreciated. Rick |

Rick, Flaming River in Ohio, maker of steering components, sells an MGB steering rack. I think it's flamingriver.com. They have an online catalog. Best, Joe |

Yep. Part #FR 1512, MG/Cobra rack and pinion, $299. |

Rick: You might try LBC. I think they had the MC on sale. I bought mine recently (pre-sale) from them. New OEM (Lockheed/Delphi). |

Rick; If you have and Advance or Autozone store in your area they should be able to order a brake MC. Both give lifetime warranties. You can order online through both but the Advance web sit is not very user friendly. On the steering rack you can try Atlantic Enterprises at; http://www.atlantic-ent.com/index.html Phone; 800-654-7565 They don't list MG in their catalog but they may be able to rebuild your unit. They did a power rack for my Jensen Interceptor, it wasn't in stock so they reworked mine. Cost $280 for the Jensen with lifetime warranty. Their ads say $135 and up for manual racks. Good luck. I have been able to get a lifetime warranteed M/C through Schucks/Kragen/Checker as well, and theirs seem to be well rebuilt, giving very good length of service. And, of course, the best part of the deal is lifetime replacement. When I had to pull mine some years ago, I ended up with a brand new unit, because that was all they could find and they ate the expense. Your luck may vary with choice of vendor. |

Check Ebay.com for the rack. They have atleast a used one pop up every week or so. I think someone has one listed now for $49.00. John Long |

You can go on line for Kragen, Schucks, Checker and order from them. Parts America.com. They will deliver to your house or show you the store that has the part and is closest. The parts are generally less expensive than buying directly from the retailers and they carry the same warrenty. The local store will also handle the core refunds when needed. I got my front calipers and master cylinder on line for a little more than 1/2 the price from the store. Cris |

Why is that no one rebuilds these racks? What is inside that is so hard to manufacturer or rebuild? Seems like it would just be bronze bushings and a ball bearing or two for the steering shaft. Anyone ever tear into one? |

Moss has part # 453-625 as available. It is a rack & pinion assembly for 229.95. I am sure other suppliers also have this unit. It is for a rubber bumper car. Good luck Garret |

Gerry; Good question. The one on my 74 leaks, spare also leaks. I think I'll disassemble the spare and see what I needs other than gaskets. I did note that the pinion and the rack are not available through Moss. I elected to send the power rack from the Interceptor off for rebuild because I needed some big spanner tools I don't have and if I screwed up and broke something replacement racks cost close to $1,000. I'll post what I find. Clifton |

Does anyone know if Advance Auto, NAPA, ETC. can supply clutch MC and slave cylinders as well? I remember talking to someone last year out in Wisconsin who specialized in rebuilding shocks, just can't recall his website and if he does MCs as well. MOSS & Vic Brit have them for about $75 and $55 each respectively. I am not comfortable rebuilding them, they are 30 years old (guess) and probably have had it. I am having a tough time shifting after a long trip today now, I have to crawl under and see if the slave cylinder has movement when the clutch is worked. |

Joe...Worldwide Auto Parts in Madison Wisconsin is who you are referring to. http://www.mailbag.com/users/nosimport/ I emailed them a while back to ask if they rebuilt MC and never heard back. That is unusual..in my other dealings with them they were very prompt. A phone call would probably be better. Maybe the email went into cyberspace? Apple Hydraulics does rebuild MC http://www.applehydraulics.com/ Maybe you can try them. ************ Thanks for the suggestions regarding the brake MC for the 68 MGB. Some of the suppliers mentioned list it as N/A and some of the others are more than I want to pay until I get more desperate. The car is stripped now so I'm a month or more from putting the MCs back in. As it stands, I called AutoValue who said they can get it for $49.99 and a $5 core charge. I heard that before from Bumper to Bumper, NAPA, etc only to have them call in a day or two saying they can't get it. We'll see.... I'll probably pop for a rebuilt steering rack for the $229. But I wish I could buy a pinion and/or a rack and rebuild it myself. Doesn't look that complicated. Thanks to all again, Rick |
