MG MGB Technical - brake servo problem
Hi All, and Merry Christmas. My Christmas present from my '77 BGT was (I think) a broken brake servo. The pedal performance doesn't seem to be servo-assisted, and the engine idling speed increases (by about 500RPM) when the brake pedal is depressed. I don't know much about servo's, but I assume that this is due to some kind of leak in the servo's diaphragm, which allows more air into the inlet manifold when the brakes are applied. I've seen "servo repair kits" for sale, so can I assume the my servo will be repairable, or does anybody advise the purchase of a complete unit (costing about £50)? And is it a big job?? Thanks in anticipation.... Dave. |

Servo seal kits, including the diaphragm cost around £50 - whole units are nearer £150! As long as there is no wear or corrosion in the servo bore then a seal kit will be OK. |

Thanks Chris, I checked the Haynes manual since posting my original question, and it doesn't give details of stripping down the servo, saying that it requires special tools - do you know if this is the case? Best, Dave. |

dave i post on the midget board, but i did buy an MGB servo - took it apart to check it out, nothing required other than a screw driver to check the basics. |
