MG MGB Technical - Caliper Rebuild
I know, I should buy new or rebuilt, but my B came with several rebuild kits in the boot and the calipers are in good shape and the bores are rust free. Question, what is the best way to drift the metal wiper seal retainer into place if one does not have the MOWOG tool described in the Bentley workshop manual? |

A friend of mine just did this job . The OE seal retainers went on with a gentle prod from a screwdriver (AP) but the other side were aftermarket parts and prolly needed the tool , and he had to clean up and re use some 2 of the old ones . Moral , dont damage the old ones taking them off , or insist on AP. |

I just rebuilt a set of midget calipers and concerning the metal ring. I kind of pressed them in with my hand until they would go any farther then took a small hammer and tapped around and around until they were seated. Seem easy enough. Brooks Twist |

Thanks S Best, I too have found that if I clean the old retainers they do fit easier! I'm just glad I didn't booger them up too much! |

Dont thank me , it was David Pymme (who you may have seen racing a Midget in Safety Fast) who gave me the tip at the natter . Just pleased you got it while the old retainers were still in this world . |

I rebuilt the ones on my 73 B, as only one side was available locally. I used the kits from TRW, assuming they would be good quality rather than those from Tiawon. The kit came with the seal for between the two halves of the caliper, so I went ahead and split it. The retainers are no problem to tap in if you have the caliper split. I know the manual says not to, but everything seems fine and its been awhile. John |
