MG MGB Technical - Can't find reverse gear gate

I purchased a 1975 B GT in September 2001 with a spare gear box and overdrive (age unknown).Having asked a garage to exchange the units due to the old overdrive slipping under load, the garage informs me they can't find a reverse gear gate,(all forward gears engage o.k.).I need to know was there a change to the gear lever design during production that means I need to purchase the later type lever to enable reverse gear selection.
Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
David.

I have a 74 B and I wanted to relocate the overdrive onto the gear knob. In order to do this I had to swap gearsticks. I found that there was no real differences apart from the ball that fits into the socket. Later cars only had one locating grove in the ball and older cars have two. I just cut a new one into the later gearstick ball. Only very early cars had a different gearstick…and I think that is because they used 3 syncro boxes.
I think there maybe a switch that limits the use of reverse gear if overdrive is still engaged…another area that may cause you a problem is the selectors that are located just under a plate on the top of the gearbox. When I had a recon box I replaced it myself and plate has to be transferred from one box to another this allows the sectors to move more than they would under normal operations. I mean that they became rearranged with me. But then I am an amateur!

I hope this helps
