MG MGB Technical - Changing an interior panel color
I have a 1974.5 mgb roadster, the door panels and footwell panels are tan. The rear panels are black, the carpets and seats are black. All the panels are in good condition. I do not want to spend the money to change the tan panels to black at this time (maybe at a later time when money is in a more plentiful supply). Is there a spray on type product for changing the panels colors? If there is, has anyone used it and how did it perform? |

There is a product called Vinylkote (look it up on Google) which permanently dyes vinyl. From what I've heard, it is very effective. Mike |

There are special spray paints for coating vinyl, in the paint section of most auto part stores. One is called Duplicolor, which is probably very similar to the product mentioned by Mike. I've used Duplicolor on a black vinyl sunroof with good results. |

I have used the vinyl dye sprays with pretty good results. One thing is to make sure the surface is very clean, use alcohol to wipe it down and remove any oils. Black covers best, but I have used a yellow on a black panel and it worked with a couple of coats. |

John, If your '74 is like mine, you have a chrome strip on the door panel which is going to be a pain to mask out before you spray. I may be able to help you though. I have a '74 with mostly Autumn Leaf interior, but black door panels. The door panels are in very good shape. I wonder, if shipping isn't too costly, would you like to trade - my black door panels for your tan ones? If so, email me at zkulka (at) hotmail.com. Matt |
