MG MGB Technical - Chrom headlight rings
Is there a recommended method to remove and reinstall the chrome headlight decorative rings? 73B Roadster Thanks, BH |

Yes, ultra violence :-). I have always found this a difficult job to do. On my MK I car AFAIK there is no set srcew and they are just held on by spring clip at the bottom of the rim. I also seem to recall that I pinged them off with a flat bladed screwdiver shoved in as close as possible to the retainer. This is good for an adrenilin rush as the paintwork on the compound curavature wings gleams all around the screwdriver blade. |

I agree with Stan. Wrap some cloth around the screwdriver, and also push down on the top of the ring at the same time as levering at the bottom. John 1964 MGB |

Get a 6mm wide strip of thin steel and bend an upstand of about 2-3mm. Put this under the ring at the bottom and push down on the top. Pull towards you. (Or heat and bend a screwdriver end!)M |

I've heard a suggestion to use a wooden paint stir stick. |

I use the same method as Michael. An old, thin screwdriver. Heat the blade red hot in a propane torch, bend it over, polish the sharp edges on a buffing wheel or with some hand held emery cloth. Slips in easily (at the bottom) and removes the ring easily with a gentle tug. Les |

Many have used paint can openers. I got one for free from a hardware store that sells house paint. Press down on the top of the ring and use the opener to pull the ring away at the bottom. |

I use aa plastic putty knife. They are thin and do not mar the paint. |
