MG MGB Technical - Cleaning Brake Lines
I am renewing the front and rear brakes of my 19712 mgb roadster. I have a new master cylinder, rebuilt calipers, new wheel cylinders, and two new pieces of brake line to the rear brakes. I still have the main brake line from the master cylinder to the front and rear brakes, though, and I would like to clean it to avoid contaminating the rest. I have heard alcohol is good to use. What kind of alcohol? What is the best way to do it? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Curt |

Why won't you replace all the lines, since all the rest of the stuff is new? |

Curt: If you are going to use the old lines, I would flush them out with brake fluid. Alcohol may not be good for flushing because you may not get all the alcohol out and it loves moisture and has a lower boiling point than water. The following site has some very good brake overhaul and theory information. It also covers the pros and cons of switching to silicone fluid. http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/Brakes/Theory/Theory.htm Good luck, Clifton |
