MG MGB Technical - Cleaning leather steering wheel
Hey all, My Mountney steering wheel is dirty and I always end up with little black bits all over my hands if it gets damp. What product is recommended for cleaning them? I don't want to find out that the dirt was holding it together and have it all fall to bits when it's clean! Cheers for any advice, -- Olly |

Hi Olly, Use a leather cleaner! Autoglym leather care or Halfords leather cleaner. This stuff also "feeds" the leather to protect it from the sweat on your hands. |

So there's no trouble using the seat cleaner on the steering wheel? I'll buy some tomorrow :o) -- Olly |

I use back shoe polish, as it restores some of the colour. Just apply with a brush, as you would to shoes, leave to dry and buff off. You need to protect yourself and the surrounding area from flying polish. I use making tape and newspaper, just as if I was making a panel to spray it. Good luck NJSS |

I've always found that shoe polish wears off very quickly and ends up on my hands and right pant leg where it contacts the wheel. I've a once-black leather wheel that is now rather brown. Has anyone experimented with black shoe dye to restore the original colour? |

Last weekend I cleaned the leather steering wheel covers on my '72 MGB and our family cars/trucks with Lexol Leather cleaner and then applied Lexol Leather conditioner. It really pulled a lot of dirt/grease out of the MGB wheel and gave a nice supple feel after, which was not too slippery. |

Woolies do leather paint which will recolour a worn wheel. |

Gliptone do a range of products to clean and condition leather. I've used it on MG steering wheels, seats and also BMW convertible seats. They also do a dye that recolours areas that are worn or fades. Worked well for me. Suggest u avoid products that are greasy /need wiping off after applying as leather is a breathing product. Gliptone stuff is water based. Good bit of ifo on how to look after leather on their site or supplied with products phone UK 0161 839 2941 www.liquidleather.com. No I don't work for them! |
