MG MGB Technical - clutch hydraulics info please
I'm in the process of working out the clutch details for a Ford 5sp gearbox in my 71 B. I'd like to stick with the MG master cylinder and select a properly sized slave cylinder. Also, I'm hoping to determine everything possible before disassembly. My questions ... 1. Sounds like most folks have a ~1/2" stroke on their installed slave cylinder (mine too). When on the bench, what stroke is this cylinder capable of? What limits it? 2. What is the bore of the slave cylinder? 1.25"? 3. What is the bore of the master cylinder? 4. The master cylinder appears to stroke about an inch on my car. What is the stroke capability of the master cylinder? What limits it? 5. I suspect this MG system is operating at a fairly low pressure due to the large bore slave cylinder. Any ideas on the risk of tripling the pressure? Thanks for your help. Tom |

Tom My response may not be relevant to your specific question, however here it is. I installed a Hi-Gear Engineering (UK source) 5-speed conversion kit which uses the Ford Siera Type N gearbox. The kit included a cast aluminum transition housing that had support brackets for both the original MGB clutch slave cylinder and the release yoke. During the exchange, I simply disconnected the clutch slave cylinder from the gearbox and left it hanging until it was time to reinstall it on the new bell housing. The clutch works a treat and has the same feel as before - better actually since it is a whole new clutch and release thrust bearing. Regards, BarryQ 73B |

Barry, Thanks for the comments. I've seen this kit. It is very nice, but I'm trying to accomplish this for far less money by using some of the components that I already have. My bellhousing was designed for cable actuation, but looks as if a slave cylinder could be added easily. When I find out the m/c geometry, I'll know the slave bore required to move the t/o bearing ~1.2". Tom |
