MG MGB Technical - Crackle in radio after change to elect. ignition
My 73 MGB now has noise in radio after changing from points to pertronix electronic ignition. Should I change the 7mm spark plug leads to 8mm? I am currently using Autolite #63 plugs, which I believe are of the resistor type. Thanks so much for your time. |

You can try a couple of different things. First, be sure that you have a good solid ground on your radio. Second, be sure that you have a good ground on your new ignition system. Third, you might try going to the 8mm plug wires, but I do not think it will make that much of a difference. Before I lost mind and changed to MG's, I use to have and restore Corvette's. On one big block Corvette, I changed from a dual point distributor to an electronic ignition. When I did this I started getting a buzz and crackle nosie in my radio. I ended up putting a noise reduction resistor in the power lead going to the radio. (Available at Radio Shack in the US.) This completely solved the problem. Give these a try. Good luck. |

Check the ground in the distributor too as well as the other ignition connections. The distributor ground used a very flexible tinsel and cotton wire which is not particularly strong, maybe it got damaged during the fitting. Oh, keep your points and condenser in the car as a spare, the Pertronix is more prone to catastrophic failure. |

Thanks all. |

The problem could also be a loose connection or bad ground in the antenna itself. Or just built-up corrosion if the ant. is original. |

I suscessfully fitted my magnetic ignition today after 2 calls to the club about wires. The car is running very well much more consistant and smooth reving. I too have some thing a little a miss with my radio as it no longer is working well at speed might bin it and fit a new one. |
