MG MGB Technical - dash away

I have a 79 B that I will be replacing the dash on. Currently the interior is clear (no seats, centre console, etc) but I want to know if there is anything else that I need to remove short of the obvious dash bits? eg. does the steering wheel or steering cowling need to be removed? Any advice re: this would be very helpful.
Thanks!

The cowling does have to come off, and it is a lot easier if the column is lowered.

I was working on my 1977 B yesterday. When I got it the dash was off and there were no bolts supporting the steering wheel. It was quite tricky to get all three bolts back in due to the angle of the wheel and it had to be just right. I then put on the cowl and JUST managed to get the dash on after this, it was pretty tight though

As I recall I undid the bolts securing the top of the column and supported the wheel on my knees while removing and replacing the dash. It only needs one bolt in loosely while the dash is out.

On late models there are two screws that hold the cowl on that are concealed by the dash when everything is back in place. Try leaving them off, and if the cowl is still secure it will make it much easier next time you want to get to the column switchgear.

L. C. I've secured a 76-80 dash and am sourcing a local to upholster it and console in Aut Leaf. Anybody ever do this? Then of course I'd have to convert to the "Magnolia" faces donchaknow. Vic

In reading some more I have discovered that the column only needs to be dropped in right hand drive cars, due to the proximity of the signal switch(?) According to the shop manual, column drops are not neccessary for a left hand drive model. Vem, wow, I never thought of that ... I suspect that it will cost at least as much to put it into leather (and repair the carve job from the DPO) ... I've also seen a lovely paintjob on a 'mulberry' MGB from Holland, with the dash pad off and metal exposed ... very tempting. This will be my cheapest option. Quite often the cheapest option can be confirmed by amount of expletives spat out during the said process!
