MG MGB Technical - Directional/High low beam switch

I replaced the directional/high low beam switch on my 74 GT last year. Yesterday I noticed that I don’t have low beams but I do have high beams. I’ve gone through the archives and tried the things that have been mentioned. No lose wires, bulbs not burned out. I able to get the lights to work when I pushed the small copper switch at the base of the stalk against the silver contact. This worked for a short period of time but then it stopped after drive for a while. Are these switches prone to breaking or is this an anomaly? Tom

Tom, It's not an unusual problem, the contacts will develop a resistance and may prevent the headlights lights from working in one position. The switch contacts can be sanded or filed to reduce contact resistance. The contacts should have near zero resistance. Using relays in the headlights may help increase the dip switch life.

Thomas,

I fully agree with Clifton. In addition, do not be afraid to take the switch apart. It is very simple and you can see how it works. There are some springs and ball bearings so just take it slow and polish the contacts.
