MG MGB Technical - Distributer Identifying
Hi, I cannot find a number on my 1980 MGB distributor. The distributor has Points although the original had electronics. I need the number to buy electronic ignition (pertronix) I was the high bidder on this item at an e-bay store but I need the Dizzy number. I looked where the book said above vacuum advance, no number. Any help Cec |

The distributor needs to be removed to see the number. The number is just above where the clamp fits around the dist. If you get the Crane ignition, the version for MGB/points/negative ground should work for all 45D and 25D points-type distributors. There was a thread about problems getting the right shutter, but it sounds like Crane will send a complete set of shutters free if the kit doesn't have the right one. |

I have the pertronix system as stated above. I guess I will have to remove the Dizzy which I didn't wan't to do. Is there a way to identify the dizzy without removing it. cec |

Get a dentist type mirror at your local auto supply or hardware store and have a look around. It can be odd being that the info will read backwards. -mike |

Bob M has some photos that may give you an idea of where to look. http://hometown.aol.com/akamrmg/MGPhotoShare.html |

Cec, I would still take out the distributor. If you remove the two bolts retaining the clamping plate to the block, you may not lose the timing setting. However, you'll probably have to reset timing anyway after installing the Pertronix. It's so easy to remove the distributor, and you'll have to do it anyway for the electronic ignition installation. It's also a good opportunity to clean out the insides and make sure the mechanical advance is working properly. |
