MG MGB Technical - Dot 4, Dot 5 or brake grease?
In the manuals, it says to use brake fluid to lubricate the seals in the master cylinder when undertaking a rebuild. What if I don’t know which type of brake fluid I am going to use? I don’t know if I am going with Dot 4 or Dot 5, and if I use one to put the parts together, and then use the other in the whole system, won’t there be a problem? I am doing a complete replacement-rebuild of all the parts, including the pipes. I usually use brake grease to install the rubber parts, but I am not sure if that is the correct thing to do. |

Brake grease works fine. All you are doing is lubricating the rubber parts so the seals edges don't fold over or tear. Cheers - Dave |

I think the original spec was Dot 2 but that was back in the sixties. Things have moved on since then. Dot 4 or 5 will be fine. 4 will be cheaper though |
