MG MGB Technical - Early brake light switch
| I have a '66 BGT with early single circuit unservoed brakes. The brake light switch is the early type, a hydraulic actuated switch which screws into the 4 way union just in front of the master cylinder. Unfortunately, my switch is on the way out (it takes a LOT of pedal pressure to turn on the brake lights - tapping the switch temporarily fixes it!) so I bought a new one from the club. Only trouble is, I can't get the old switch out! It just screws in but it's seized solid and I can't put much pressure on it because it'll risk fracturing the brake lines. I didn't want to put penetrating oil on it in case it got into the brake fluid...anyone got any suggestions on how to shift it? Thanks, Tim. |

| Sounds Like a pickle. I would suggest applying heat to the 4 way to get it to expand a little, then tap the switch to try to break it free, then apply torque to unscrew it. Failing that, you might consider buying a new 4 way, installing the new switch it in, then replace it on the car. The only flaw here is if the switch is stuck, the lines may be also. Hopefully, the heat will do the trick. Good Luck Dennis, Arizona. |
